Addressing the issue, US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel emphasized the inconsistency of China’s position. He stated, “The People’s Republic of China can’t have its cake and eat it too. You cannot have it both ways.” Patel stressed that while China seeks to enhance its relationships with Europe and other nations, its support for Russia in the ongoing conflict poses a significant threat to European security.
Patel underscored that supporting Russia’s military actions not only jeopardizes Ukrainian security but also undermines stability in Europe. He reiterated that this stance is not exclusive to the United States but is shared by its allies in the G7, NATO, and the EU.

The US warning comes in the wake of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s state visit to Beijing, where Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed willingness to collaborate with Putin to shape the future of bilateral relations.
During discussions at the Great Hall of the People, President Xi emphasized the importance of commemorating the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties as a new starting point for enhancing cooperation between the two nations. He highlighted the need to align development strategies and deepen bilateral cooperation for mutual benefit.
The visit was marked by ceremonial gestures, including the playing of national anthems and a gun salute as Putin’s motorcade arrived. President Xi reiterated China’s commitment to advancing modernization and fostering new productive forces through high-quality development, which he believes will contribute to global economic growth.
