In a recent announcement, Air India, now under the ownership of the Tata Group since its acquisition from the government in 2022, has revised its free baggage limit policy, affecting passengers across various fare categories.

Reduction in Free Baggage Allowance

Effective from May 2, Air India has reduced the free baggage limit from 20 kg to 15 kg for passengers traveling in categories such as ‘Economy Comfort’ and ‘Comfort Plus’. This move aligns Air India’s baggage policy with that of its competitors in the airline industry.

Impact on Passengers

Passengers who have booked tickets under these categories will now need to adhere to the new baggage limit of 15 kg for check-in luggage. This reduction marks a departure from the previous allowance of 20 kg, which was in effect until last year.

Exceptions and Alternatives

However, passengers traveling under the ‘Economy Flex’ category are still entitled to a baggage allowance of up to 25 kg for hand luggage. Additionally, Air India offers certain benefits to passengers booking ‘Economy Flex’ tickets, including no-change fees and other privileges.

Cost Differences and Benefits

Despite the higher fares associated with tickets under the ‘Economy Flex’ category, passengers can enjoy advantages such as 10 kg additional baggage allowance, enhanced loyalty point options, and seat selection flexibility. On popular routes like Delhi-Mumbai, the price difference between ‘Comfort Plus’ and ‘Flex’ tickets is approximately Rs 1,000.

Air India Expansion of Flight Services

In other news, Air India has announced the commencement of direct flight services from Delhi to Zurich in Switzerland, starting from June 16. Zurich will become the seventh European city to be serviced by Air India’s direct flights from India. The flights will operate four days a week – Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday, using Boeing 787 aircraft.

While the reduction in free baggage allowance may inconvenience some passengers, Air India’s efforts to streamline its policies and expand its flight services reflect the company’s commitment to providing efficient and convenient travel options for its customers.
