The Congress Party Faces Fresh Rs 1,700 Crore Tax Notice Ahead of Lok Sabha Polls
The Income Tax department has delivered another blow to the Congress Party by serving a fresh notice of Rs 1,700 crore for discrepancies in tax returns from 2017-18 to 2020-21. This notice comes amidst an already strained financial situation for the party, with penalties amounting to Rs 210 crore imposed earlier. The Congress alleges that the BJP is behind these actions, accusing them of ‘tax terrorism’ to weaken opposition parties before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Senior party leaders, including Ajay Maken and Jairam Ramesh, have condemned these actions, calling out the BJP for alleged violations of tax laws and demanding a hefty penalty of over Rs 4,600 crore from them. The Congress is also gearing up to challenge these notices in the Supreme Court, having faced setbacks in the Delhi High Court previously.
This financial squeeze on the Congress comes at a crucial time, with political parties grappling for funds after the Supreme Court’s ruling against electoral bonds. The Congress, along with other opposition parties, welcomed this decision, highlighting concerns over transparency and fairness in political funding.
Despite these challenges, the Congress remains steadfast in its commitment to the upcoming elections, vowing to continue its campaign and uphold its promises to the people of the country.
