Rajiv Kumar – Chief Election Commissioner Receives ‘Z’ Category Security Ahead of Lok Sabha Elections – What Threats Prompted the Upgrade?

The Chief Election Commissioner, Rajiv Kumar, has been granted ‘Z’ category security cover by the Ministry of Home Affairs, amid escalating concerns over his safety in light of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and perceived threats against him. This decision, based on intelligence reports from the Intelligence Bureau (IB), underscores the seriousness of the situation surrounding Kumar’s safety.

Under the ‘Z’ category security protocols, a comprehensive security detail has been put in place, with a total of 33 security personnel, including CRPF commandos, tasked with safeguarding Kumar. This includes armed static guards stationed at his residence, personal security officers providing round-the-clock protection, and armed commandos to escort him during his movements. Additionally, standby personnel ensure continuous surveillance and protection.

The decision to upgrade Kumar’s security status comes amidst heightened political tensions and opposition protests against the Election Commission, further exacerbated by the impending Lok Sabha elections. Kumar’s role as the 25th Chief Election Commissioner is crucial in ensuring the integrity and fairness of the electoral process, making his safety a top priority for the authorities.

This move also reflects broader concerns about the safety of key public figures in the face of potential security threats and the need for enhanced security measures to mitigate risks. With the elections looming and tensions running high, the government’s proactive approach to Kumar’s security underscores the gravity of the situation and the importance of safeguarding democratic institutions.

Kumar’s appointment as Chief Election Commissioner in 2022, following his tenure as an election commissioner since 2020, underscores his experience and expertise in overseeing electoral processes. As the nation gears up for the upcoming polls, ensuring his safety becomes paramount to upholding the democratic principles and integrity of the electoral process.
