The Kerala Health Department has raised an alarm following an increase in West Nile fever cases across three districts: Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Thrissur. The department has advised all districts to remain vigilant amidst the surge in virus infections.

High-Level Meeting and Directives

In response to the outbreak, a recent high-level meeting was convened by the Kerala Health Department to devise strategies to combat the spread of West Nile fever. State Health Minister Veena George has directed officials to intensify pre-monsoon cleaning activities and mosquito control efforts.

Surveillance and Prevention Measures

District Medical Officers have been instructed to ramp up cleaning activities and coordinate with local self-government bodies to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds. Additionally, the District Vector Control Units are actively collecting and testing mosquito samples to monitor the spread of the virus.

West Nile Fever – Symptoms and Transmission

West Nile fever is transmitted through bites from infected Culex mosquitoes. While symptoms may not manifest in most cases, infected individuals may experience fever, muscle aches, and neurological issues. The virus primarily spreads through mosquito bites and does not transmit directly between humans.

Historical Perspective

West Nile viral infection was first detected in Uganda in 1937. Since its emergence in Kerala in 2011, sporadic cases have been reported across the state. However, fatalities due to the virus have been rare, with isolated cases reported in 2019 and 2022.

Urgency of Action

Health authorities emphasize the importance of immediate medical attention for individuals exhibiting symptoms of West Nile fever. Citizens are urged to cooperate with preventive measures, including wearing protective clothing, using mosquito repellents, and eliminating stagnant water sources.

The recent surge in West Nile fever cases underscores the importance of proactive measures to control mosquito populations and mitigate the spread of vector-borne diseases. With coordinated efforts and community vigilance, Kerala aims to contain the outbreak and safeguard public health.
