Kolkata Metro Embraces Digital Transformation with QR Code Ticketing System

In a bid to modernize its ticketing system and enhance passenger convenience, Kolkata Metro Railway is gearing up to introduce a cashless payment solution, revolutionizing the way commuters purchase tickets.

Transition to Digital Transactions

This groundbreaking initiative, announced recently, aims to address the common challenge faced by passengers when they lack exact change at ticket counters. By transitioning to digital transactions, the Metro aims to streamline the ticketing process, making it more efficient and hassle-free for commuters.

Introducing QR Code Ticketing at Kolkata Metro

The new payment method, set to debut on the East-West Metro corridor, also known as the Green Line, will leverage Unified Payments Interface (UPI) technology. This innovative approach will allow passengers to buy tickets using their smartphones, eliminating the need for cash transactions altogether.

Collaboration for Success

In collaboration with the State Bank of India and the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), Kolkata Metro Railway is spearheading this transition towards digital ticketing. To ensure its effectiveness, a trial run was recently conducted at Sealdah station within the East-West Metro network under the supervision of the General Manager of Metro Railway.

How It Works

Under the proposed system, commuters will simply need to inform the ticketing agent of their destination and then scan a QR Code displayed at the counter using their smartphones. Upon successful payment, a QR Code-based paper ticket will be generated, granting passengers access to Metro services.

Expanding Digital Services

Beyond ticket purchases, the digital payment system will also allow commuters to conveniently recharge their smart cards through the same platform. This holistic approach reflects Kolkata Metro Railway’s commitment to improving passenger experience and embracing technological advancements.

Future Plans

Once the trial phase concludes and the system demonstrates its efficiency, it will be officially rolled out across the Green Line. Additionally, there are plans to extend this digital ticketing facility to other Metro corridors, including Dakshineswar-New Garia, Ruby-New Garia, and Joka-Taratala routes.

A Step Towards Modernization

This initiative marks a significant milestone in Kolkata Metro’s journey towards modernization and aligns with the national agenda of promoting digital transactions and cashless economies. By embracing UPI-based ticketing, Kolkata Metro Railway aims to simplify commuter transactions, reduce queues at ticket counters, and provide a seamless travel experience for passengers across its network.
